Living Wall
Increased opportunities for environmental enhancement and access to nature are provided by incorporating green roofs and patios and living walls into our urban architecture. Extensive green roofs are characterized by their low weight, shallow (5-15cm) growing medium, and minimal maintenance requirements. Due to the shallow soils and extreme desert-like microclimate on many roofs, plants are typically low and hardy, alpine, dryland or indigenous.
Living walls are vertical gardens planted in specialized soil-filled grid systems attached to walls or façades of buildings.
The Benefits of Extensive Green Roofs and Living Walls are Many and Include:
- Improvement of Air Quality
- Reduction of Urban Heat Island Effect
- Moderate Building Temperatures
- Contribute to Carbon Dioxide/Oxygen Exchange
- Stormwater Management (absorbs 45-75% of rainfall)
- Sound Insulation
- Building Envelope Protection
- Habitat and Biodiversity
- Aesthetics
- Health (visual contact with vegetation has been proven to result in direct health benefits)
